At AXA, we understand that sometimes rented house insurance can be unclear both for landlords and tenants, which is why we aim to make it as simple as possible. As a landlord we understand that protecting the property you own is important. We also offer tenants who rent their home protection for their personal belongings through our contents insurance policy. It is highly recommended if you rent your home to avail of contents insurance, particularly when you have furnished the home yourself. Let’s look at the responsibility of each, and what the policies include, below.

What is AXA Landlord Insurance for?

It is the responsibility of the landlord to obtain buildings insurance in order to protect any of the physical buildings and outhouses of a property. However, they are not liable to insure any of the tenant’s contents or belongings. With AXA NI landlords can choose between two types of Landlord insurance policies – Buildings Only Insurance or Buildings & Contents insurance.

Buildings Only Insurance

With Buildings Only insurance, your physical buildings, driveway, patio, permanent bathroom fittings and fixed appliances are covered in the event of loss or damage.

Buildings and Contents Insurance

This insurance covers the landlord’s property and their contents, including furnishings such as sofas, beds, bookshelves, etc.

Although Landlord Insurance is not a mandatory requirement, we recommend insuring your assets to financially protect yourself in the event of unforeseen circumstances. Terms and conditions apply, and you should consult your AXA policy documents for full details.

Why do renters pay for contents insurance?

When a landlord is renting out their property, they may wish to protect their own assets but are not legally obliged to protect their tenants personal belongings. As a tenant, to make sure your personal belongings or additional furnishing you have added to your home are protected, contents insurance is highly important.

Contents Insurance helps give renters peace of mind that when the unexpected happens by making sure that their prized possessions are protected and alleviating the financial burden you may face if your belongings have been impacted by an unforeseen incident.

What does contents insurance cover?

Starting from £112, AXA NI Contents Insurance provides renters with protection of their most valuable possessions in the event of any unforeseen circumstances such as theft, storm, floods, or fire damage. Renters can insure items such as watches, jewellery, TVs, furniture, instruments and gaming consoles.

Some further benefits of having contents insurance is that it also includes cover for gifts, gardening equipment, and also covers you if your keys are stolen, along with replacement locks up to the value of £500. Terms and conditions apply.

What additional extras can be added to a renter’s contents insurance policy?

Should you wish to extend your contents insurance even further, we offer a range of optional extras, such as accidental damage within your home, and bicycle cover. You can even insure some belongings for when you’re using them outside the home, such as your bike, camera or jewellery. Any or all of these can be availed of for a slight additional cost.
